Pete Porath from Portland, Oregon had found the solution to help senior chickens stay away from a pot: a retirement home for our hens and roosters! Most people let their hens perish after they begin to become useless with egg laying. Porath has began to share his idea of a loving retirement home for birds in their sunset years.  He now houses about 1,000-2,000 chickens a year in his five-acre farm in Estacada. He had re-homed all sorts of birds including ducks, peacocks, turkeys, chickens, guinea fowls, and quails. Wayne Geiger, a backyard bird farm inspector, recommends to include the senior birds into your backyard too. City residents such as Russ Finley and Ray Frye enjoy keeping their chickens and entertain them in friendly ways. They are said to be a great role model for a families who house chickens.

“They have personalities,” Finley explained in a NYT article.  “And they each have different ways of interacting with you, and they make different sounds.” Together they built a beautiful garden and their coop was starred in the 2011 “Tour de Coops” and had encouraged other people keeping chickens in homier places. Older chickens should be experiencing a wholesome end, according to Finley, Frye and Porath’s strategies.
